Save on Gas

How to Save Money on Gas

* Close the gate. If you drive a truck, keeping your tailgate closed will save gas. It’s a common misconception that leaving it open will reduce gas consumption, but scientific studies prove that driving with the tailgate closed uses less gas.

* Stay cool. Filling your tank during cooler hours (early morning or at night) will make you get more bang for your buck. When it’s hot, gas molecules expand, and you get slightly less gas per gallon. Filling up in cooler temps means the gas molecules more compact, thus getting you more actual gas per gallon.

* Pick a card, any card. A lot of gas stations give discounts on cost-per-gallon if you pay with a prepaid store card. Average discount is 3-cents per gallon, but those pennies add up.

* Slow down. Driving fast burns gas at a faster rate. Drive the speed limit (or slightly below), to save gas and money.

* Combine errands. Do all of your errands in one trip, rather than leaving your house
every day or several times a week. Make a list of the things you need to do, then plan a route that won’t have you zig-zagging all over town.

* Run your car with water. This ebook teaches readers how to inexpensively convert your car so that it runs on water and gas, which can double your fuel efficiency.

* Put ‘em up. Like the tailgate misconception, a lot of people think that driving with your windows down will save gas. The truth is that modern cars are designed so aerodynamically that driving with your windows down creates a “drag” effect that ends up burning more gas.

* Keep it inside. Putting stuff on your roofrack cuts down on aerodynamics, and makes your car work harder. When travelling, keep your cargo inside the car for a more fuel-efficient ride.

* Buddy up. Carpooling will save everyone in your carpool money. Make sure that all the members of the carpool live near one another, on the same route to work.

* Don’t idle. Leaving your car running at drive-through restaurants and motor banks is like tossing dollar bills out your window. Turn off the car and roll down the windows. (It’s uncomfortable during the summer… but throwing away money is more uncomfortable.)

* Man power. Ride your bike or walk to do simple errands, visit friends, or go to the park. If your children are too young to ride their own bikes (or too small to keep up with you), consider investing in a bike seat, trailer, or tandem trailer.

* Blow ‘em up. Keeping your tires inflated to the proper psi (pounds per square inch) will help save gas. If your tires have less than the optimum level of air pressure, thiscauses more road friction (and more gas burned).

* Tune it up. Make sure to get regular tune ups. Keeping your car maintained will keep it running smoothly and more efficiently.

* Lighten the load. Don’t carry unnecessary cargo in your car. Extra weight means extra work for your car.
